Passionfruit Martini Recipe | Fresh & Fruity Cocktail

A Cocktail Worth the Hype

Some cocktails come and go.

The Passionfruit Martini isn’t one of them.

Whether you’re sitting at a rooftop bar, ordering drinks with friends or celebrating a special occasion, chances are you’ll spot one making its way across the room. Served with its signature half passionfruit and a shot of sparkling wine on the side, it’s become one of the most recognisable cocktails in the world.

And after one sip, it’s easy to understand why.

Sweet passionfruit, fresh lime and smooth vanilla vodka come together to create a cocktail that’s bright, tropical and dangerously easy to drink.

The best part? You don’t need to be a professional bartender to make one at home.

Where Did the Passionfruit Martini Come From?

Despite its tropical flavour, the Passionfruit Martini wasn’t created on a tropical island.

It was invented in London during the early 2000s by legendary bartender Douglas Ankrah, who wanted to create a drink inspired by the flavours of vanilla and passionfruit.

Originally called the Pornstar Martini, the cocktail quickly became one of the most ordered drinks in bars across Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Today, many venues have renamed it the Passionfruit Martini, but the recipe remains largely the same.

What Makes This Cocktail So Popular?

Unlike many fruity cocktails, the Passionfruit Martini manages to be sweet without becoming sickly.

It works because every ingredient has a job:

  • Passionfruit provides bright tropical flavour.
  • Vanilla softens the tartness.
  • Fresh lime adds acidity.
  • Vodka keeps the finish clean.
  • Sparkling wine refreshes your palate between sips.

It’s balanced, refreshing and surprisingly sophisticated.

People always ask whether you’re supposed to pour the sparkling wine into the cocktail.

You can if you like, but traditionally you take a sip of the martini first, then a sip of the sparkling wine.

The bubbles cleanse your palate between sips and make every mouthful taste just as bright as the first.

It’s one of those little touches that makes the Passionfruit Martini feel just that bit more special.

Make It Your Own

One of the reasons I love this cocktail is how easy it is to customise.

Like it sweeter?

Add another 10 ml of vanilla syrup.

Want it more tart?

Use extra fresh lime juice.

Love tropical flavours?

Try adding a splash of mango purée.

Prefer gin?

Swap the vodka for a citrus-forward gin to create a completely different style of cocktail.

What Should You Serve It With?

Because it’s fruity and refreshing, the Passionfruit Martini pairs beautifully with:

  • Fresh prawns
  • Sushi
  • Thai food
  • Chicken skewers
  • Pavlova
  • Cheesecake
  • Passionfruit slice
  • White chocolate desserts

It’s also one of my favourite cocktails for brunches, birthdays and girls’ nights because almost everyone enjoys it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Prosecco served on the side?

Traditionally it’s served separately so you can alternate between the martini and sparkling wine.

Can I make one without alcohol?

Absolutely. Replace the vodka with alcohol-free vodka and top with lemonade or alcohol-free sparkling wine.

Can I make a jug?

You can prepare the cocktail base ahead of time, but always shake individual serves with ice for the best texture.

Can I use bottled passionfruit pulp?

Yes. Fresh passionfruit tastes better, but quality purée works perfectly.

How strong is a Passionfruit Martini?

One cocktail contains approximately 2.2 Australian standard drinks, depending on the brands you use.

Final Thoughts

There are plenty of trendy cocktails that disappear after a few years.

The Passionfruit Martini isn’t one of them.

It’s fruity, elegant, easy to make and consistently one of the most popular cocktails you’ll find behind almost any modern bar.

Once you master this recipe, you’ll understand exactly why it’s earned that reputation.
