A Cocktail Born from Simplicity
The Sea Breeze cocktail is all about lightness and refreshment. With just three ingredients — vodka, cranberry juice, and grapefruit juice — it became a summertime favourite across the world.
Like many cocktails, the Sea Breeze has a history with a few twists. Early versions in the 1920s featured gin and grenadine, but by the mid-20th century, the recipe shifted to its modern vodka-based version. The rise of cranberry juice as a bar staple cemented the Sea Breeze’s place as a go-to casual cocktail.
It’s closely related to a few other vodka-and-juice classics:
-
Cape Codder → vodka and cranberry.
-
Madras → vodka, cranberry, and orange.
-
Bay Breeze → vodka, cranberry, and pineapple.
The grapefruit in the Sea Breeze is what sets it apart, giving the drink a tangy lift that makes it extra refreshing.
Sea Breeze Recipe (Australian-Friendly)
Ingredients:
-
45 ml vodka
-
120 ml cranberry juice
-
30 ml fresh grapefruit juice
-
Garnish: lime wedge or grapefruit slice
Method:
-
Fill a tall highball glass with ice.
-
Pour in the vodka.
-
Add the cranberry juice, then top with grapefruit juice.
-
Stir gently to mix.
-
Garnish with a lime wedge or grapefruit slice.
👉 Bartender Tip: Freshly squeezed grapefruit juice makes a huge difference in taste. Bottled versions can taste bitter and flat.
The Flavour Profile
The Sea Breeze is crisp, tangy, and slightly sweet:
-
Cranberry juice → tart with a touch of sweetness.
-
Grapefruit juice → citrusy and slightly bitter, balancing the cranberry.
-
Vodka → clean and neutral, tying everything together.
It’s a drink that’s refreshing without being overly sweet, making it perfect for hot afternoons or relaxed get-togethers.
Perfect Pairings
Thanks to its light, citrusy character, the Sea Breeze works well with:
-
Seafood → prawns, oysters, ceviche, or grilled fish.
-
Salads → especially citrus or vinaigrette-based dressings.
-
Appetisers → shrimp cocktail, bruschetta, or cheese plates.
-
Grilled chicken → light marinades with lemon or herbs.
-
Fruit desserts → berry sorbet, citrus tarts, or fresh fruit salad.
Why the Sea Breeze Endures
The Sea Breeze is proof that simplicity can be powerful. It’s quick to mix, consistently refreshing, and versatile enough for any occasion — from beach days to backyard barbecues. With its tart, fruity flavour and clean finish, it has earned its place as a true classic.
