Strawberry Daiquiri Cocktail Recipe

The Strawberry Daiquiri: A Ripper Aussie Twist on a Classic

The Strawberry Daiquiri – it’s a bloody legend in the cocktail world, known for its refreshing fruity flavour and that awesome red colour. It’s the perfect drink for a hot arvo, a barbie with mates, or just chilling by the pool. Whether you like it frozen or shaken, this beauty mixes the sweetness of strawberries with the tang of lime and the smooth flavour of rum.

In this guide, we’ll dive into the history of the Daiquiri, learn a bit about why strawberries are good for you, and give you a top-notch recipe with Aussie measurements so you can make it at home.

A Bit of Daiquiri History

Before we get to the Strawberry Daiquiri, let’s have a yarn about where the original Daiquiri came from. It all started way back in the late 1800s in Cuba. Apparently, an American bloke named Jennings Cox was having a party and ran out of gin. So, he chucked some lime juice, sugar, and rum together, and the Daiquiri was born! It got its name from the town of Daiquiri in Cuba.

The original Daiquiri was just rum, lime juice, and sugar, but over the years, people started adding different fruits, and that’s how we got the Strawberry Daiquiri. Frozen versions became popular in the 1950s when blenders came along, making it even more refreshing.

Why the Strawberry Daiquiri is a Winner

  • Refreshing and fruity: Strawberries are naturally sweet with a bit of tartness, which goes perfectly with the lime and rum.
  • Perfect for summer: Nothing beats a cold, fruity cocktail on a hot day.
  • Easy to make: You don’t need to be a fancy bartender to make a Strawberry Daiquiri.
  • Make it your own: You can easily change the sweetness, tartness, or even make it frozen or shaken.

Strawberries: Good for You and Good in a Drink

Strawberries aren’t just delicious – they’re also good for you! Here’s why:

  • Packed with vitamin C: Good for your immune system and your skin.
  • Full of antioxidants: Helps protect your body from those nasty things that can make you sick.
  • Low in calories: So you can enjoy your drink without feeling guilty.
  • Good source of fibre: Helps keep your gut happy.

Making the Perfect Strawberry Daiquiri: Aussie Style

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 500g fresh strawberries: Or you can use frozen ones.
  • 60ml white rum: Go for a good quality one.
  • 30ml fresh lime juice: About 2-3 limes should do it.
  • 20ml sugar syrup: Or 1 tablespoon of caster sugar.
  • 1-2 cups of ice: If you’re making a frozen daiquiri.
  • Fresh strawberries and lime slices for garnish: Gotta make it look good!

Here’s how you do it:

  1. Prep the strawberries: Wash and hull the strawberries, then cut them up. If you’re using frozen ones, you can skip this step.
  2. Make the sugar syrup (optional): Mix equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan over low heat until the sugar dissolves. Let it cool down.
  3. Blend it up: Chuck the strawberries, rum, lime juice, sugar syrup (or sugar), and ice into a blender. Blend until smooth for a frozen daiquiri. If you want a shaken daiquiri, muddle the strawberries with the lime juice and sugar in a cocktail shaker, then add the rum and ice and shake it like mad.
  4. Taste and adjust: Have a sip and see if it needs more sugar, lime juice, or rum.
  5. Serve and garnish: Pour it into a glass, add a strawberry and a lime slice, and enjoy!

Tips for a Top-Notch Daiquiri

  • Use good strawberries: Ripe, red strawberries will give you the best flavour.
  • Balance the sweetness: You want it sweet, but not too sweet.
  • Chill your ingredients: This will stop your drink from getting watered down.
  • Use good rum: Don’t use cheap rum – it’ll ruin your drink.
  • Adjust the thickness: If it’s too thick, add more liquid. If it’s too thin, add more ice or frozen strawberries.

Mix It Up: Daiquiri Variations

  • Strawberry Mango Daiquiri: Add some mango for a tropical twist.
  • Strawberry Basil Daiquiri: Chuck in some fresh basil for a fancy touch.
  • Spicy Strawberry Daiquiri: Add a slice of jalapeno or a dash of cayenne pepper for a bit of heat.
  • Strawberry Coconut Daiquiri: Use coconut cream or milk for a creamy, tropical flavour.
  • Non-Alcoholic Strawberry Daiquiri: Skip the rum and use sparkling water or apple juice instead.

How to Serve Your Daiquiri

  • Glassware: Use a coupe, margarita, or Collins glass.
  • Garnishes: A strawberry and a lime wedge are classic.
  • Straws: Use a wide straw for frozen daiquiris.
