The French Martini: Parisian Chic with a New York Twist
Picture this: you’re sitting at a swanky bar, the lights are low, and you’ve got a vibrant pink cocktail in your hand. That’s the French Martini – a bloody sophisticated mix of vodka, raspberry liqueur, and pineapple juice that’s as delicious as it looks.
Now, here’s the kicker: even though it sounds all fancy and French, this drink was actually born in New York City back in the 80s. Some reckon a bartender named Rodney Basil dreamt it up at a famous restaurant called Elaine’s. But no matter who invented it, the French Martini quickly became a hit, and it’s now a classic all over the world.
Why We Love the French Martini
- Flavour explosion: The French Martini is a perfect balance of sweet and tart. The raspberry liqueur gives it a fruity sweetness, the pineapple juice adds a tropical tang, and the vodka brings it all together.
- Easy to make: You don’t need to be a fancy bartender to make a French Martini. Just a few simple ingredients and you’re good to go.
- Sophistication in a glass: This drink just oozes class. It’s perfect for a special occasion or when you want to feel a bit fancy.
Making the Perfect French Martini: Aussie Style
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 60ml Premium Vodka: Don’t skimp on the vodka, mate. Go for a good one.
- 30ml Raspberry Liqueur: Chambord is the classic choice, but you can experiment with others.
- 15ml Fresh Pineapple Juice: Use the good stuff – freshly squeezed is best.
- Ice Cubes: Plenty of ice to keep it nice and cold.
- Garnish: A fresh raspberry or a pineapple wedge.
Here’s how you do it:
- Chill your glass: Fill a martini glass with ice and let it sit for a few minutes. Tip out the ice before you make your drink.
- Add the ingredients: Pour the vodka, raspberry liqueur, and pineapple juice into a cocktail shaker.
- Shake it up: Fill the shaker with ice and shake it like mad for 15-20 seconds.
- Strain and serve: Use a fine strainer to pour the drink into your chilled glass.
- Garnish: Add a raspberry or a pineapple wedge.
Tips for a Top-Notch French Martini
- Use good quality ingredients: Especially the vodka and raspberry liqueur.
- Shake it well: A good shake makes it nice and frothy.
- Chill your glass: It keeps your drink colder and looks fancy.
- Experiment with different liqueurs: Try different raspberry liqueurs to find your favourite.
- Get creative with garnishes: A sprig of mint or a lemon twist can add a nice touch.
Food Pairing Ideas
The French Martini is a versatile drink that goes well with a variety of food:
- Appetizers: Oysters, cured meats, or prawns.
- Main Course: Seared scallops, grilled salmon, or grilled barramundi with pineapple salsa.
- Dessert: Chocolate torte or raspberry macarons.
More Than Just a Drink
The French Martini is more than just a cocktail – it’s a taste of sophistication and a reminder that sometimes, the best things in life are a bit unexpected.

When I do enjoy the occasional cocktail, I generally do not think about a Martini at all. However, this French Martini is getting another look from this gal.
I have bartended in the past, usually at a dive bar that sold mostly draft/bottled beers. I had my occasional customer who came through and ordered a ‘real’ drink lol. I had never gotten the French Martini, a Manhattan, or a dry Martini, but never that one.
I will be trying one of these splendid beverages on my next venture out, I tell you now!
Thanks for this great recipe and cocktail idea. I promise to drink responsibly, with 2 hands 😈.
