A Cocktail Born of Coastal Vibes

The Beachside Breeze is a tropical classic that embodies carefree living, sunny afternoons, and the sound of waves rolling in. While variations of this drink popped up along the coasts of Florida and California in the 1980s and ’90s, its enduring appeal lies in its bright balance of sweet peach, tangy cranberry, and refreshing orange — all rounded out by a smooth hit of vodka.

Think of it as a cousin to the Sex on the Beach, but lighter, fruitier, and even more refreshing.

Beachside Breeze Recipe (Australian Measurements)

Ingredients (per serve):

  • 45 mL (1 ½ oz) vodka (choose a clean, smooth brand like Absolut or Grey Goose)

  • 20 mL (¾ oz) peach schnapps

  • 60 mL (2 oz) cranberry juice

  • 60 mL (2 oz) orange juice (fresh is best)

  • Orange slice + maraschino cherry, to garnish

  • Ice cubes

Method:

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.

  2. Add vodka, peach schnapps, cranberry juice, and orange juice.

  3. Shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds.

  4. Strain into a chilled highball glass filled with fresh ice.

  5. Garnish with an orange slice and cherry.

Bartender Tips

  • Play with ratios: Prefer tangier? Add more cranberry. Sweeter? Boost the OJ.

  • Layer for a “sunset” effect: Pour cranberry gently over the back of a spoon so it floats.

  • Presentation counts: Serve with a parasol, bamboo straw, or colourful garnish to capture true tropical vibes.

  • Batch it: Multiply the recipe into a jug — perfect for pool parties and barbecues.

Flavour Breakdown

  • Vodka → clean base that lets the fruit shine.

  • Peach schnapps → adds juicy sweetness and summer fruit notes.

  • Cranberry juice → tart, crisp, balancing the sweetness.

  • Orange juice → bright, citrus lift that ties it all together.

The result: sweet upfront, tangy in the middle, and smooth on the finish — like a tropical breeze in a glass.

Variations to Try

  • Beachside Royale: Add a splash of sparkling wine on top.

  • Tropical Twist: Swap vodka for coconut rum.

  • Berry Breeze: Use raspberry schnapps instead of peach.

  • Mocktail Version: Omit vodka, double the juices, and top with soda water.

Perfect Pairings

  • Snacks: Fresh prawns, tropical fruit skewers, or coconut shrimp.

  • Mains: Grilled fish tacos or jerk chicken.

  • Desserts: Mango sorbet or pavlova with passionfruit.

FAQs

Is Beachside Breeze the same as Sex on the Beach?
They’re similar, but the Beachside Breeze is lighter and doesn’t use crème de cassis or pineapple juice.

Can I make it without schnapps?
Yes — use peach nectar or syrup for flavour, though schnapps adds an extra kick.

What glass is best?
A highball or hurricane glass shows off the vibrant colours and tropical garnishes.
