From Moscow to Mexico – The Mule Story

The Moscow Mule was born in the 1940s in Los Angeles, designed to sell two struggling products: vodka and ginger beer. Served in a copper mug, it became an instant hit.

From there, the Mule family grew — vodka wasn’t the only spirit that worked. Enter the Mexican Mule, which swaps vodka for tequila, celebrating Mexico’s national spirit while keeping the spicy fizz that made the original famous.

This simple twist completely changes the drink’s character, giving it more depth, peppery warmth, and a distinctly Mexican soul.

Mexican Mule Recipe (Australian Measurements)

Ingredients:

  • 60 mL tequila (blanco for bright citrus, reposado for smooth depth)

  • 30 mL fresh lime juice

  • 15 mL agave syrup (optional, for balance)

  • 120 mL ginger beer (quality brand with bold spice)

  • Ice cubes

  • Garnish: lime wedge + fresh mint sprig

Method:

  1. Fill a copper mug (or highball glass) with ice.

  2. Add tequila, lime juice, and (if using) agave syrup.

  3. Top with ginger beer.

  4. Stir gently with a bar spoon.

  5. Garnish with lime and mint.

💡 RSA Note: Around 1.6 standard drinks per serve.

Why the Mexican Mule Works

The magic is in the balance:

  • Tequila brings earthy, peppery backbone.

  • Lime adds bright acidity to cut through.

  • Ginger beer provides spice, fizz, and sweetness.

  • Agave syrup (if used) echoes tequila’s origin and softens sharp edges.

Every sip is layered — first citrus, then ginger heat, finishing with tequila’s bold character.

Bartender Tips

  • Choose your tequila wisely: Blanco = fresh, grassy; Reposado = smooth vanilla + oak.

  • Don’t skip fresh lime juice: Bottled tastes flat.

  • Go bold on ginger beer: Fevertree, Bundaberg, or Q Mixers bring spice and balance.

  • Copper mug effect: Keeps the drink colder for longer and enhances aroma.

  • Balance to your taste: Agave syrup is optional — add sparingly if your ginger beer is already sweet.

Variations to Try

  • Spicy Mexican Mule → add muddled jalapeño or a dash of chili powder.

  • Smoky Mule → swap tequila for mezcal, adding earthy smoke.

  • Tropical Mule → muddle fresh pineapple before building the drink.

  • Berry Mule → muddled blackberries or raspberries add colour + sweetness.

  • Cucumber Mule → fresh cucumber slices for a crisp, cooling twist.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Using cheap tequila → stick to 100% agave.
❌ Flat ginger beer → fizz is part of the experience.
❌ Skipping the stir → ingredients need blending, even if it’s a built cocktail.
❌ Over-sweetening → let lime acidity shine.

Perfect Pairings

The Mexican Mule pairs beautifully with:

  • Tacos & fajitas → lime + tequila echo Mexican flavours.

  • Seafood ceviche → bright citrus complements fresh seafood.

  • BBQ chicken wings → ginger spice cuts through heat.

  • Salty snacks → tortilla chips + guac are unbeatable.

FAQs

Why is it served in a copper mug?
Tradition and function. Copper keeps the drink colder and adds a crisp sensation on the lips.

Which tequila is best?
Blanco for sharper, brighter flavour. Reposado if you prefer smoother, rounder notes.

Is agave syrup necessary?
Not always. Add only if you prefer a slightly sweeter balance.

Can I make a non-alcoholic version?
Yes — swap tequila for Seedlip Grove or just double the lime and add soda water.
